Image credits and licensing

Every image on this site was downloaded from Wikimedia Commons by scripts/fetch-art.ts and is credited here with the licence it carries.

The distinction that matters: a two-thousand-year-old sculpture is in the public domain, but a modern photograph of a three-dimensional object usually carries its own copyright, most often CC-BY-SA. A faithful two-dimensional reproduction of a public-domain painting or vase generally does not. The selection therefore prefers vase painting, fresco and engraving, and the licence is recorded per image either way.

52 credited images. Figures with no surviving classical portrait — Chaos, Erebos, Tartaros among them — carry a generated mark instead and appear in no row below.
